“In Brightest Day, In Darkest Night, No Evil Shall Escape My Sight. Let those who worship evil’s might, Beware my power…Green Lantern’s Light!” Literal chills, every time we hear it. The Green Lantern Corps has to be, for our money, the greatest peacekeeping force in comic book history. A person is only deemed worthy of becoming a Green Lantern if they possess tremendous willpower and the ability to overcome fear. If they meet those two criteria, they are presented with the Power Ring and initiated into the Corps as one of nearly 8,000 intergalactic defenders whose job is to maintain peace in their Space Sectors and keep evil at bay. But what happens when the Power Ring makes the wrong choice? What happens when instead of spreading light, it covers everything in darkness? What happens when the Most Powerful Weapon in the Universe, falls into the wrong hands? To most of you, Bruce Wayne would seem like the perfect candidate for the Lantern Corp; but on Earth -32, that is not the case, at all. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s DC-shaking Metal event introduced one of its most-iconic groups of supervillains; and ironically enough, it is comprised entirely of evil Batmen from the Dark Multiverse. But out of all them, none are as terrifying as The Dawnbreaker. Wielding the most-terrifying version of a Power Ring in DC History, the Dawnbreaker is an evil, Green Lantern Batman whose goal is to snuff out all light in the Multiverse. But how did Bruce Wayne become such a ruthless supervillain? Or was he always like this, and we just didn’t know? We’ll answer all that and more as we take a look at the Metal tie-in one-shot Batman: The Dawnbreaker, written by Sam Humphries and illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver. This is Dawnbreaker’s origins – Explored.
